About the event
Catherine S. Ramírez, Professor of Latin American and Latino Studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and a Phi Beta Kappa scholar, will give a free public lecture at Ursinus College on Monday, October 20 at 4:30pm ET in Schellhase Commons 105. Professor Ramírez's lecture, "Assimilation: An Alternative History", questions whether the United States is a “melting pot” in which immigrants are assimilated into a unified new culture.
She considers how certain groups have been assimilated as “outsiders on the inside,” focusing on efforts to civilize Native Americans; African American racial passing narratives; the figure of the model minority; and the ways Indigenous Oaxacans are shaping and being shaped by Los Angeles.
